Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 29, 2008 From: Mel Ugel Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 4:09 PM Harry Lauter's film career spanned about thirty years. He worked in A and B grade films ... did second leads in westerns and serials ... was a cliffhanger hero and TV hero ... and was one of the more recognized faces on TV during decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Harry's TV and film work concluded in the 1970s, and then his energies were devoted to a successful second career as an artist. Harry passed away on October 30, 1990. "Harry became an accomplished artist, painting mostly beautiful oil landscapes, with lakes, trees, and mountains. His father, also an artist, was a great influence on him as a child. The Favell Museum of Western Art has one of his landscapes on display in their permanent collection. Being an artist myself, we met in 1970 at various art functions. He had a gallery in Studio City, California, 'Lauters Gallery Row', and also ran an art show on La Cienega on Sundays. After we married, we had a small gallery in Ojai, California, where we did our paintings. We exhibited together in professional art shows and two-man shows all over the country. We felt very fortunate to be able to spend our life doing what we loved to do. He sold everything he painted, and was pleased that his art would be around long after he was gone. - Doris Lauter, September Mel Ugel Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 29, 2008 From: jcorbett Sent: Friday, August 29, 2008 9:12 PM How about Harry Lauter? With war clouds hanging over much of Europe and Asia, this cowboy became one of the first Hollywood actors to enter the service, joining the Naval Reserves and receiving a commission. Following flight training and a year as an instructor, he was thrust immediately in the Pacific air war, flying an F6F Hellcat off the carrier, the USS Essex. He would go on to fly 57 missions, shooting down seven Japanese aircraft, making him one of the early American aces of the war. Of the 57 missions he flew, three of his Hellcats were so full of holes when he returned to his carrier, they were rendered "unfit for duty" and dumped overboard. As horses are my speciality i saw a lot of similarities in this horse to Gene's although i did not see a belly patch on this horse but then again it was also not rearing which Champion does with Gene. Juan Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 21, 2008 From: Angel.Gutierrez Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2008 7:43 AM The creator of the Lone Ranger was Frank Striker Angel M Gutierrez Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 21, 2008 From: Mel Ugel Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2008 9:13 AM The Lone Ranger originated on WXYZ radio in Detroit in 1933. Created by George W. Trendle and written by Frank Striker, the show became so popular it was one of the reasons why several stations linked together to share programming on what became the Mutual Broadcasting System. Aimed primarily at the children's audience, The Lone Ranger made a successful transition to ABC television in 1949. Several characteristics were unique and central to the premise of this western, and the initial episode which explained the legend was occasionally repeated so young viewers would under-stand how the hero gained his name and why he wore a mask. The Lone Ranger was one of six Texas Rangers who were ambushed while chasing a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish. After the battle, one "lone ranger" survived, and was discovered by Tonto, a Native American who recognized the survi-vor as John Reid, the man who had saved his life earlier. Tonto thereafter referred to the ranger as "kemo sabe," which is trans-lated as "trusty scout." After Tonto helped him regain his strength, the ranger vowed to hide his identity from Cavendish and to dedicate his life to "making the West a decent place to live." He and Tonto dug an extra grave to fool Cavendish into believing all six rangers had died, and the ranger donned a mask to protect his identity as the single surviving ranger. Only Tonto knows who he is ... the Lone Ranger. After he and Tonto saved a silver-white stallion from being gored by a buffalo, they nursed the horse back to health and set him free. The horse followed them and the Lone Ranger decided to adopt him and give him the name Silver. Shortly thereafter, the Lone Ranger and Tonto encountered a man who, it turns out, has been set up to take the blame for murders committed by Cavendish. They estab-lished him as caretaker in an abandoned silver mine, where he produced silver bullets for the Lone Ranger. Ev-en after the Cavendish gang was captured, the Lone Ranger decided to keep his identity a secret. Near the end of this and many future episodes, someone asks about the identity of the masked man. The typical response: "I don't rightly know his real name, but I've heard him called... the Lone Ranger." Re: CowboyPal Trivia for August 21, 2008 From: RPITT Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2008 9:48 AM The Lone Ranger was created by George W. Trendle, with help from co-workers, and developed by writer Fran Striker. The radio show premiered on station WXYZ, Detroit, Michigan January 30, 1933. They married a few years later and she helped him prepare his book for publication. Marjorie Bonner and her sister Priscilla both made silent movies and early sound movies. Marjorie was in TRAIL OF COURAGE(1928) with Bob Steele and Priscilla Bonner was in 3 BAD MEN with George O'Brien. Ross Need Help with Western From: Bobby Copeland Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2008 6:46 PM Perhaps you can indentify a B-western for me. It was one a Johnny Mack Universal western and it has something to do with with brother and sister bringing in a herd of cattle. There is a long horseback chase with Johnny and the brother chasing after someone. As the camera tracks ago, there are sections of fence and other structures that go by. The finale takes place at night during a thunderstorm with the cattle stampeding. Does this sound familiar? If you know the title, please let me know. Many thanks.) (Many thanks. (Perhaps it was one of Kirby Grant's early Universal westerns.) This B-western heavy was a favorite of movie fans from 1930-1950. His screen credits were from almost all of the Poverty Row studios. He was almost a regular in every western at P.R.C. when they closed in the fifties he hit on hard times. His last appearance was the role of playing a corpse on Gunsmoke TV series. Shortly after filming this segment he also died. Name this good bad guy? Name the cowboy star, the title of the film, the year it was made and the running time of the film. Addenda to Answer From: Mel Ugel Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 5:07 PM My apologies to all Cowboy Pals. The word 'titled' was an incorrect word to be included in the question. If you read my question, omitting the word 'titled' you will see the way the question should have been stated. Boderland is the correct answer and was Hoppy's longest flick (remove the word 'titled') .that precedes longest and it makes sense. Borderland was, also, the longest running western made - 82 minutes. Sorry about the confusion re. Johnny Mack's movie. Regrets, and thanks for calling this to my attention. Mel Ugel Answer to CowboyPal Trivia for August 14, 2008 From: Mel Ugell This film, is not only the longest "titled" western of this cowboys movies, but also the longest "B-western" ever made.
